The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) was founded by the Federal Government of Nigeria in June 2021. This university was one of two new universities of technology created in Nigeria, with campuses in Akwa Ibom State in the South-South and Jigawa in the North-West geopolitical zones.
Prior to the foundation of these two universities, the government founded four technology universities: Yola (North East), Akure (South West), Owerri (South East), and Minna (North Central). The six universities of technology are satellite universities of a proposed apex National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. Nigeria hopes that by creating FUTIA and other new universities, it will enhance access to university education, achieve balance and equity in facility location, and increase scientific and technological knowledge.
The Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi is one of 11 specialized science universities, including six technology universities, three agricultural universities in Makurdi, Abeokuta, and Umudike, and two health sciences universities in Azare (Bauchi State) and Ila-Orangun (Osun State).
