In June 2022, the National Universities Commission (NUC) authorized State University of Medical and Applied Sciences aka SUMAS to function as a university, making it the 59th state university in Nigeria.
SUMAS is situated in Igbo-Eno, Enugu state, along the Ninth Mile-Obollo Afor expressway. In September 2022, the state government selected Prof. James Chukwuma Ogbonna as the vice chancellor.
As a result of this development, Enugu currently has two state universities. SUMAS and ESUT.
SUMAS is a comprehensive medical school. It is among the top universities in Nigeria for studying any medical course because it is a medical university.
